Camon
Pyrenees
Nestled within an Ariège vale, Camon is a fortress-village huddled around its abbey-castle.
In the Middle Ages, the spot was chosen by a benedictine community to set up an abbey. It was destroyed in 1279 by a flood, then again by a group of highwaymen in 1494, it was thus abandoned. In the beginning of the 16th, Philippe de Levis, new bishop of Mirepoix had it rebuilt and fortified. The church holds an 18th c tryptic showing the evangelists in a symbolic way. Along the walls, the Maison Haute was refurbished as a lordly mansion.
